There is no denying that the nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage was a big win for the LGBT community. After all, advocates have been pushing for marriage equality for decades and the Supreme Court finally legitimized these efforts. But as exciting as that day was, it is by no means the end of the fight for fairness in all aspects of life, not just marriage.
Last week, lawmakers in the House and Senate presented the Equality Act. This bill would increase legal protections for LGBT individuals by modifying the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Fair Housing Act, and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. Sexual orientation and gender identity would be dealt with directly in all three acts if the Equality Act were to pass.
Why the Need for Increased Legal Protections?
Same-sex marriage was first legalized in California in 2008 and it is easy to assume that the state is 100% supportive of the LGBT community. Unfortunately, even California is a far cry from the support that states should be offering in this day and age.
The Equality Act would protect gay and transgender individuals in the workplace, at school, and even in housing situations. Each of these areas remain tremulous, despite the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. Unfortunately, it could be a long road to get the bill passed due to Republican control in both chambers of Congress.
